The launch in 2008 was hampered by server so overloaded that they spit out exceptionally bad search results, but visiting Cuil you will find that the search results today are good and the Explore by Category function down to the right is one of the best.
DuckDuckGo
The search engine with the silly name and a cute interface combines Yahoo BOSS, Wikipedia and it’s own crawler DuckDuckBot to give you both hard information in a Zero-click information box, categories to further refine searches and the actual search results.
Founded by Gabriel Weinberg, who started and then sold The Names Database, DuckDuckGo is a private venture and has grown steadily since it launched in September 2008. Watch out for this search engine in 2010, it has a fine niche carved out for itself
Spezify
A totally cool search engine, Spezify. The search results are presented as images and newspaper clippings spread out on the screen, the clippings having one paragraph quotes from the result web site. By looking through some of the clippings you get a excellent overview of the topic you are researching and can make an educated decision on which search results to visit and read more about.
Spezify is very handy tool for brainstorming. You’ll get a ton of new ideas for your article or blog post just by entering your topic into the search box and watching the resulting collage.
Secret Search Engine Labs
This search engine ranks web pages in a way slightly different than the big mainstream search engines. As Google gives priority to mature and huge sites, many new, smaller and relevant sites are difficult to find in their search results. Secret Search Engine Labs ranks web pages based on page contents and links using their trademark CashRank algorithm to filter out questionable content.
Secret Search Engine Labs was started in 2007 by Simon Byholm, a software engineer and entrepreneur from Finland, and in addition to relevant and different search results it aims to provide tools and information for webmasters on how pages are ranked.
Bing
Bing is a re-branding of Microsoft’s Live Search that was previously MSN Search. Just now Microsoft has managed to grab almost 10% of the marketplace for search by running a bold marketing campaign. The attention of media during the re-launch has fueled innovation adding new functions like the daily changing background photo, suggested topics and popular trends.
Watch Bing closely in 2010 as Microsoft has finally taken some real action to grow their market share and it’s likely that we will see more changes over time.
Blekko
This is a fresh start-up that is keeps it’s secrets almost as well as Google itself when asked for the what and the when of their new search engine. The rugged management team with ex-employees from Topix, Google, AOL and Netscape Search makes me believe they have something fascinating going on.
At the time of writing in early December 2009 they have not yet launched but with the launch scheduled for the end of 2009 this search engine will make headlines in 2010. Let’s hope it’s good news.
Monitter
This is a real-time Twitter monitor with options to reply and re tweet. You input three keywords and after some processing the latest tweets containing your keywords start to roll down the screen in three separate columns. When you have a need to monitor you niche or area of expertise or if you just want to track the conversation this is a great tool.
What About The Rest?
I think you already know that Google is innovating and it’s pretty sure they will make it into the news in 2010. Wolfram Alpha is interesting as it is the only major search engine that makes the results from data.
There’s a multitude of social, real-time or just odd search engines starting up and there’s no telling if one of them develops into the next Twitter and grabs it’s share of the search marketplace. There is finally signs that we could see big changes in the search engine landscape after years of rule by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and to some extent Ask. There’s so much new technology out there. New search engines using social networks, visual presentation, new semantic algorithms and real-time results to stand out from the crown are popping up everywhere. The result, even if we get no new top three, is that the ruling behemoths will have to keep innovating to keep up with the crowd and in the end we’ll get a better search experience.
